From Fascinators To Beads

Another vocation that caught our fancy was beads-making. And not only did they make necklace, they also make earring, wrist-watch and bangles from beads as we provided cash for materials.
Of course it didn’t take long before they gained mastery here. Some even went as far as using Ankara fabrics to make beads necklace, earrings and others.

No doubt, the last summer break now marks an indelible milestone in the journey, not only for members of Girls Arise Initiative but also for some of their friends in Ijegun community and its environs.  It was indeed encouraging to see some of these girls seize the opportunity of the free summer skill acquisition program to learn from our Volunteer trainers.   Rather than roam the streets aimlessly or sit at home idle and vulnerable, they chose to get empowered. Our Journey As Change-Makers

So much has been going on with the Blended Learning Program of the Global Girl Project which started on 1st February 2020. We have had seven sessions so far as our girls have met every Saturday from 8am to 10am to learn and articulate their thoughts on what action they can take as Change-Makers in their community. At each session, the girls watch recorded videos lectures from Julia Lynch, Founder- Global Girl Project; they work in groups to discuss the topics and then do their assignments. They also share their thoughts on happenings around them, especially as it relates to Nigeria.  The lectures from the blended learning academy have been quite robust and engaging. They have also been highly instructive and impactful, thus changing the mindset of the girls. Growing Up In Ijegun; My Take On Youth-Waywardness

Ijegun is a densely populated community. I can call it an under developed community which with lots of youth with low mentality about education. There are a lot of youth and teenagers that are uninformed and don’t take education serious. As a result of this, there is high rate of school dropouts, teenage pregnancy, hooliganism etc. The poverty in this community has led youth to engage in different atrocities which later ended up in regret. Firstly, talking about teenagers dropping out of school, I can literally say that the cause of this is peer pressure. Most students have high thoughts of passing out in flying colours when they first started school. They started well and were determined to make their parents proud but in the long run, they lost focus and mingled with unserious and nasty friends who diverted their attention and lured them into bad behavior, e.g. going late to school, truancy, failure to do class work and bullying fellow students.
