Global Girl Project: 2nd Cohort Ends With Book Donation

“The Global Girl Project is an initiative dedicated to mobilizing socially-minded and community-driven young women from developing countries to become leaders. Our exchange and blended learning programs are designed to enrich skills-sets, generate support, and provide knowledge for these young leaders to implement their initiatives within their communities. As our Blended Learning Leadership Initiative grows our web platform will connect a network of girls from all over the world who will be able to support each other’s work and inspire each other to truly change our world.” – Global Girl Project.

Global Girl Project partnered with Bestspring Foundation to implement the blended learning curriculum in Nigeria. The first Cohort ended with the Waste Management and Sanitation Project. Owing to the success of the first cohort, Global Girl continued its partnership with Bestspring Foundation.

The second cohort of the Blended Learning Leadership Initiative kick-started with about ten girls from Ijegun Community, a community known for the high rate of social vices, teenage pregnancy and rape. The vision of the project is to see these girls become leaders and change agents who will lead change in their community.

The girls were trained on various topics that will equip them as young leaders. The cohort is blended with online lectures with other girls around the world and a blended of local training given by the officer in charge at Bestspring Foundation. Some of the topics they received training on are:

-      Girls as Leaders

-      Girls have a voice, 

-      Girls and their Community, 

-      Girls/Women that made an impact and changed their community.

-      How to use your voice 

-      Impact of Listening, Speaking and Writing

-      The Use of Social Media to make an impact.

As a tradition, the girls must practice and implement every knowledge gained during the training. On 19th November 20202, the Ijegun girls organised a Book Drive Project in the Secondary School, Ijeododo Senior Grammar School where they donated books and chairs.

This meeting held on the 2nd Friday of the month.  The meeting started by 2:00pm with opening prayer. Praise and worship was taken by Chukwu Peace. It was basically to kick start the mentoring program; hence there was a call-in session by the Project chair, Mrs. Bimbo Adegbite. Bimbo asked a question, who is a mentor? Olowogaba Tobi, one of the girls answered that a mentor is someone you care about you or you look unto for guidance to achieve your goal. Bimbo said when you are in a mentoring class; you have to express yourself very well to your mentor i.e. feel free to say anything bothering you to your mentor. She also talked about the benefit of the mentoring program. She said that the mentors are going to develop the girls in their skills, talent, vocations etc. she added that the mentors are there to encourage them as well as care for them.  She assured the girls of her support and readiness to help. She talked about the phone and this is a moment the girls were waiting for.

Need to Empower Marginalized Girls as Assets for Nation-Building!

The need for renewed efforts to address the peculiar needs of out-of-school adolescent girls in slums communities has again been brought to the fore, but this time with a strategic plan to mobilize resources to maximize their potentials, provide increased access to education and health services. This is premised on fact that overwhelming majority of out-of-school girls have no say over their schooling and are indeed traumatized. Global Girl Project: The Making of Change makers

For six weeks, some girls in Ijegun Community had been given a life-long opportunity to learn from home and abroad, being part of the Global Girl Project, a partnership with Bestspring Foundation. The girls took part in the Blended Learning Leadership Initiative having gone through different stages of training on topics such as: Who Is A Leader Roles of Leaders Women who have made an impact and changes within their community. Mastering the Art of Listening, Speaking & Writing.   Online Research on a Movements in Nigeria e.g. Occupy Nigeria. Knowing your Environment and all that it entails, asking parents, leaders all around and brainstorming on the Project of Change they intend to work on.
